Question 1:   1 Chronicles 17:3-14, 22:6-10   Ephesians 2:19-22

Question 2: Passion and Resurrection   (A Good Friday question)

Mathews 27:11-56, Mark 15:1-41, Luke 23:1-49, John 18:14-40, 19:1-37

The Passion and the resurrection of Jesus are the key elements in the Gospel story. Jesus
was rejected by his own people, and abandoned by his handpicked disciples.  Besides
taking an awful beating (see the movie "Passion of the Christ"), he was cruelly tempted to
despair by Satan and died in obedience to the heavenly Father.  The raw images in the
movie perhaps invade our religious comfort zone, which has long since been cleansed of
the Gospels' harsher edges.  Nowadays we worship in churches where the bloodied body
of Jesus is absent from sanctuary crosses or else styled in ways so abstract that there is no
hint of suffering.  In sermons of contemporary churches, too, the emphasis all too often is
on the therapeutic: what Jesus can do for us.  But the story of Passion really depicts the
suffering of the Christ for the sake of love.  So love and suffering are inseparable. When
we observe Good Friday, are we ready to share the cross that Jesus carries?  Or are we
still following what theologian H. Richard Neibuhr summarized the creed of an easygoing
American Christianity: "A God without wrath brought men without sin into a kingdom without
judgment through the ministrations of a Christ without a cross."   Please share your thoughts.

Question 3: Jesus' body --  God's Temple

Matthew 23:37--24:2  Mark 14:58  1 Corinthian 6:19  Ephesians 2:19-22

In the Gospels, Jesus foretold the destruction of Jerusalem's Temple; he also referred to his own physical body as a "temple" which would be destroyed but rebuilt in 3 days.  In Paul's letter to the Corinthians and Ephesians, he used "temple" both as our "individual physical body" and "congregation/faith community", which is "the dwelling place of God in the Spirit".  In this Easter season, as we receive Jesus' sacrificial love for all of us, we realize that it is our blessing that we live in a society with religious freedom, and that we can freely learn about the teaching about the "Temple" in our Holy Scripture.  Our freedom was bought with a price---Jesus' body.  How do we return His love and rebuild "God's temple" in our daily life?
