October 3rd, 2004 Question 1: 1:1-17 Why did the Gospel According To Matthew start with Jesus’ Genealogy? What do these 42 names mean to a 21st century Taiwanese American? Example 1: Abraham & David Example 2: The five women: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Uriah’s wife, and Mary (The first three were Gentiles, Uriah was a Gentile so his wife would be considered a gentile after marrying him. Only Mary was a Jew by Jewish law.) Example 3: 1:17 The Matthew Genealogy consists of three segments of 14-14-13 generations of descendents by Abraham. What are the 3 turning point event/person of each segment? How can we apply what we learn from these turning points in our daily lives to nurture our faith? Question 2: 1:18-19 Why was Joseph called “ a righteous man” by the author of Matthew? What can we learn from his act of faith: to follow God’s will instead of conforming to cultural norm? Question 3: 2:16-18 If someone ask you: “ How can you call your God a merciful God, when He allowed so many innocent babies to be killed by King Herod and only notified Joseph’s family for a safe escape?” how would you response? Question 4: 3:10 From Jesus’ insistence that John baptize Him, we learn that Jesus took Baptism very seriously. Even though He was sinless, He told John: “ Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” What can we learn from this teaching of Jesus? You can see it from the Sermon on the Mount. And the new interpretation Jesus brings is the way toward the Kingdom of Heaven.
