October 24th, 2004 Question 1 Matthew 13 Jesus taught “Kingdom of Heaven” with many parables in Matthew 13. These included: Sower, Mustard Seed, Yeast, Weeds, Hidden Treasure, Pearl, and Net. Then He concluded with “ Therefore every teacher of the law who has instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.” As 21st Century Taiwanese Americans, how do we read these parables so that we can understand the message about the kingdom of heaven as both new and old? What did understand meant by Jesus in this context? Question 2 Matthew 14: 28-32 Peter said to Jesus: “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” Jesus said: “Come.” Peter was able to walk on water until he became afraid and began to sink. Jesus saved him because he cried out: “Lord, save me.” What happened to Peter happen to us in our prayer life every day. How can we act differently in order to “keep walking on the water”? Question 3 Matthew 14:13-21; 15:29-39; 16:10-12 In both narratives about feeding the crowd of thousands, Jesus instructed His disciples to feed the crowd before he fed them. Why did He give His disciples such a difficult task, knowing that they were able to perform miracles? What lesson did this seemingly trivial detail teach us? Why did he use these two miracle events with loaves to teach His disciples about the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees? What does the yeast mean in this context? Question 4 Matthew 16:24-26 What “ Cross” is Jesus calling each one of us to take up and follow Him? “ Discipleship never consists in this or that specific action; it is always a decision, either for or against Jesus Christ.” ---- Dietrich Bonhoeffer : The Cost of Discipleship Question 5 Matthew 18:15-20 In these verses, Jesus taught us how to handle “brother sinned against you”.
