Small Miracles at Elijah¡¦s Promise

By Christine Su

Going to Elijah¡¦s soup kitchen for the first time was exciting for me.  I remember volunteering in San Francisco and the feeling I had after doing it was so fulfilling.  Participating at a soup kitchen is not only about giving people food.  It¡¦s about giving them the support and hope that they need to keep going in their lives.  Many people may think that washing a couple pots, giving out trays, putting food on a plate, or just wiping some tables are such small tasks.  However, it¡¦s not small to the people who are sitting at the clean tables or receiving the food.  Even a smile can brighten up a person¡¦s day.  While I was waiting in line for the trays to give to the people, I remember seeing a blind man being aided through the door.  He slowly walked to the tables with his walking stick.  After sitting down and getting his meal he just kept saying over and over again how thankful he was for everything he had in his life.  He thanked God for his food, for his health, and for the people volunteering.  Watching a blind man being so grateful for what he had made me aware of how much I was taking for granted.  I have so much more than just the necessities in life, and yet during my meals, I have to admit, I sometimes forget to thank God.  We can never say thank you too many times.  So right now I just want to thank god for my family, my friends, my home, and everything I have to look forward in my life.  Thank you God.
