The Taiwanese American Language Center (TALC) in New Brunswick, NJ, is a learning environment about the heritage of Taiwanese and Taiwanese American. It was established in 1987 by the joint efforts of Taiwanese/American Fellowship Presbyterian Church (TAFPC), Taiwan Care Inc., and Taiwanese American Association – NJ Chapter. Its program is design to promote and preserve Taiwanese language and cultural heritage, among the first and second generation, and to forge Taiwanese American identity. The core activity is the weekly language classes that focus on Holo Taiwanese language and other culture-related workshops about craft, art, geography, custom and beyond. Various classes are conducted from kindergarten to junior high by age. The class schedule is combined with TAFPC Sunday School, and is conducted in the early Sunday afternoon for one to two hours. Teachers are typically drawn from concerned parents and local professionals to conduct classes. Class contents have included: 1.) Language practice, 2.) Cartoon video watching, 3.) Craft workshop, 4.) Folk story telling, 5.) Singing-Along with folk songs and art songs, and some occasional field trips. There is also the annual speech competition, on either Mother’s day or Christmas, which has become an annual tradition that has attracted great interests. The teachers of TALC are also frequently invited to present workshops in the Taiwanese American Conference and the Conference of Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Students Association (ITASA.)
